Congratulations to the Newfies who are now in wonderful forever homes. We are currently getting calls daily about Newfs in need, so if you can help, please let us know! Donations are ALWAYS gratefully accepted. We have had some major medical bills. Fortunately all of them have responded to the love of our foster homes, and the medical attention we have been able to provide, including assistance from the NCA Charitable Trust. Thank You to those who have donated, and we appreciate everyone's help as funds are few, and there are more dogs needing help. Click on the link below, to email us, if you can help, or are interested in adopting |
|
SCNR currently has 10 Newfoundlands in Foster Care with others needing help. We have placed 38 Newfoundlands to date in 2010. Financial donations are greatly needed. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out an application and note what, or which dog, you are interested in. Please keep checking back to our site as we will be listing new arrivals as soon as they are ready for a new home. Some dogs coming in from shelters need time for us to get to know them a little, and others may have health needs before they are ready to be adopted. So we may not have photos up of all the dogs we have in foster care. Adoptive Family is responsible for all transport of any Newfoundland they adopt. Our resources are focused on getting the Newfoundlands into our care, moved to a safe foster home and Vet visits. Occasionally we get two Newfoundlands in together, and if they are closely bonded we will try to place them together. So if you would like to be considered for this type of placement, please be sure and let us know. It is a rare occurrence, but we will flag your application, if this something you would be interested in. If you are willing to give a home to a senior Newf please let us know. The old ones are very special and occasionally we get calls about dogs over the age of 8 in need of a home. Typically there is no adoption fee for these guys, and they deserve special homes to live out their final years. The love of a veteran Newf is something that can never be equaled. |

7/10/10: He's continuing to lose weight! Yes, he's quite the drooler in this heat, but thats part of his charm! He's a happy boy, and needs a forever family who will continue with his care. He is no long critical and we know the 'right' family is out there for him. He will need someone who will not feed him when he begs, but will help him maintain a healthy weight when he gets there. He's a big boy, with knees that aren't so great, but he does get around and goes outside to potty with no problem. He would make a great Newfie for an older family who are home a lot and can include him in their daily Television/Computer time. 5/30/10: Great news on the big guy!!! He has lost 45 lbs.!!!!! He went from 215 lbs. to 170 lbs.!!!! Still has more to lose, but he was able to finally get a regular collar and leash today!!! 4/15/10: Thank You to this boys WONDERFUL Foster family! He is slowely getting better. He's lost a lot of weight and is now begining to actually look like a Newfie should. He enjoys mud puddles but can't stand for long periods so it makes it difficult to get him cleaned. He LOVES people and has to be with people all the time. We're still hopeful and are optimistic for a recovery. His wound on his foreleg is still not healed, but he is not stable enough for any sort of surgery, so we are grateful for every day of any sign of progress. 3/28/10: We're proud to say this guy has lost some weight and is recovering well from an unforseen wound on his foreleg. He is begining to go on short walks and loves being with the other dogs. He will need a VERY special home who can physically help him keep losing weight and keep mobile. Currently his needs are very high but he is making progress day by day. 03/2/10: This boy has a long way to go. He is extremely overweight and he is at one of our best foster homes. With some great foster care, Vet care and prayers we are hopeful that he will lose the 70 pounds he needs and gets some mobility back. |

08/18/10: Last Friday was Vet day for many of our Rescues. Mollie went to OSU for her follow up and we received sort of a mixed message. There is damage to her heart that will not change, but she was cleared to be spayed with caution. We are going to arrange to have OSU do her spay where the Cardiologist and Anesthesiologist can both be present if needed. We will make arrangements for that within the next three weeks, as she is just going out of a heat cycle. She continues to thrive and they increased her heart Med and will be starting a beta blocker after her spay. This will help protect her heart as long as possible as she gets older. With the increase in med this week, we have noticed her energy level increase, so nobody has told Mollie that she has limitations. 07/10/10: Mollie continues to do extremely well. So well that she's become quite the shoplifter when she goes to the pet store. She loves to explore and is learning that swimming is a fabulous thing to do. She's not quite sure why yet, but she's a great little swimmer and loves to go bye bye. She has finally stopped falling to the floor when her collar is put on. Most of the time, she will push her nose right into the loop in front of her for her premier collar to go over her head. She walks well in a flexi with verbal commands to return to check in. She's a VERY HAPPY girl. Her house training is coming along slowely, she will need more consist work on that since she had always been a kennel dog. She does well during the day with an indoor/outdoor run, only having accidents inside when something unusual happens with nobody there to remind her. She sleeps every night in a crate and loves to snuggle with a soft blanket, sheet, or towel and her ball. We are still battling a ear infection in her left ear, but it is much better. 06/21/10: Well...it was a been busy week for our girl, whom we have named Mollie. The OSU visit brought some VERY good news! Her primary problem is/was a PDA, which effects the entire heart when not fixed. The longer it goes on the more damage that occurs to all parts of the heart due to the increased blood/pressure flow. Given her approx. age of 3-5 years, we knew she needed something done as soon as possible, as most PDA dogs do not live past 1 year of age. So after a few phone calls for funding, she had surgery on Wednesday, (6/16/10) to put a stint into the ductus causing the problem. We're pleased to say she came through with flying colors and the pressures in her heart have decreased substantially already. Which leads us to the other information that we thought was also a problem. It was originally determined that she also had SAS, but while doing another doppler, there was no ridge found, and after surgery the aortic pressure reduced to a high normal range. Leading to the conclusion there is no SAS, the increased pressue was from the excess blood flow being sent back through the lungs, into the left side of the heart through the aortic valve. A vicious circle that was causing her heart to pump really hard and it has increased in size to compensate. It is expected that the pressures and the size of her heart will reduce some more as the heart med begins to work and since her heart is not pumping so much blood. She will be kept calm for the next week, and on a heart Med for a couple of months. We are hopeful that her heart recovers in size and stays that way for the rest of her life. At this point, as long as everything continues to go as expected, the Cardiologist, Dr. Brian Scansen, at OSU, does not need to see her for 2-3 months, at which time she should be cleared for us to spay. A great big THANK YOU to Mary Price and the NCA Health Challenge for helping us with part of the funds to get this surgery, and to Dr. Scansen at OSU for his excellent medical skills. We are currently looking for a forever home for Mollie as she deserves the BEST! Her life expectancy at this point should not be reduced anymore than any other Newfoundland of her lineage, but as with everything, there are no guarantees. She is already showing that she has more energy and is a real doll. She just wants someone to love her.....She is currently being fostered in the Cincinnati, OH area. 6/09/10: We have some heartbreaking news about our girl. She has Sub Aortic Stenosis (SAS) and possibly Patent Ductus Arteriosis (PDA). Which means she has a very bad heart, but we're not telling her. We are taking her for a consult at Ohio State University Veterinary Cardiology on 6/14/10 to see if there is anything we can do, or what her long term prognosis may be. We will then adopt her to the best family we can find who will LOVE her for whatever time she has. At this point we do not believe she can be spayed, so we will be extra careful in placing her, so her new family knows how to handle an intact girl. She will need Meds and her family will need to monitor her condition. One the brighter side, she loves carrying around a ball, and her coat is slowely growing back in. She's absolutely a doll, and makes everyone fall in love with her as soon as she meets them. 5/30/10: Wow, this girl is a real sweetheart! Very submissive to new people and will literally crawl on her belly but LOVES attention. We're working on exposing her to different things, and we finally have a handle on her bloodwork so she will be spayed this week. Her ear infection is cronic and will be a ongoing battle, but she is very good about allowing people to administer drops, etc. Overall she's just a great girl, and LOVES puppies. She will mother any pup she meets. Her coat is begining to grow nicely, so we're working on updated photos. She is now being fostered NW side of Indianapolis, IN. 4/30/10: This girl is making up for lost time. She's extremely sweet and has extra energy but isn't overly huge. She's about 90 pounds and was used for breeding. She was passed around to a couple different shelters before coming to us, and has adjusted extremely well, taking everything in stride. She loves attention and gets along well with other dogs, and kids. We were initially told she was about 3-4 years old then we were told she is about 7 years old, so its pretty hard to tell, given her currently 'up' personality. She has a broken tooth that will be extracted while being spayed. She is up to date on vaccinations and is recovering from an extremely bad ear infection. |

07/10/10: What can I say about this boy but the fact that he has found out life is GREAT playing with other dogs and not worrying about lifes challenges. He's a wonderful boy who shows his exuberance by rocking and rolling through the house. He will make a great companion for the right home, with another canine friend for him to play with. Inside cats are tolerated, but he is not to be trusted, as he will chase, and is just too playful and could hurt one without meaning to. 06/09/10: This guy is a very good boy. He's learning to go with the flow. He gets along well with other dogs, and is absolutely one that learns by example. He's done great in his foster home and it now up to date on all vaccinations, and is neutered. He is currently being fostered in the Indianapolis, IN area. |

08/18/10: Sad news today.... after getting through a very hard surgery last Friday, the test results came back that the mammary tumour that was removed (only needed to remove one) is cancerous. There is a concern that she may not have a normal life expectancy. We're not telling her that, and we are still consulting with the Vets as to where to go from here, but she has come through so much to get this far, we think she deserves better! 08/02/10: We think we may have made some progress. She has responded better than expected to the antibiotic and is gaing strength every day. She has several mammary tumours that need removed so we are monitoring her close to do this and her spay as soon as she is strong enough. 07/10/10: Well, we're still optimistic about this girl. She's been tested for a variety of different things, and all comes back clear. She is currently being treated for a possible tick borne illness, and seems to be responding to the meds. She is extremely shy around new people, but is making progress with a consistent routine. We are patient, and we will give her the time she needs. 06/21/10: We're optimistic about this girl. She was sighted trying to survive by living in a thicket in southern IN. She is extremely sweet and had been turned out to make it on her own. She has arthritis in her spine and is fearful of new things. We're not sure how long (minimum of a month) she was living on her own, but a HUGE thank you goes out to her 'rescue friend' that did not give up on her. She worked extremely hard to befriend her and contacted us to take her in. She's very sweet, and just needs time and medical attention. |

08/18/10: Well she's ready for her forever home! She came through her heartworm treatment and her spay beautifully. She's taught us that she will not go potty with someone watching, so she needs a fenced in yard where she can do her business not on leash. She is trustworthy in the house, and loves other dogs. She will follow the leader, and is very grateful for any attention you give her. She's come a long way and deserves a forever home. She's up to date on all vaccinations and currently being fostered in Ft. Thomas, KY. 08/02/10: Photos coming soon, she's doing great! She has come through her heartworm treatment with flying colors, so we will be spaying her within the next two weeks and she will be ready for her forever home! 07/10/10: So far so good for this girl. She is undergoing heartworm treatment and will be spayed once she is through it. She's taking everything in stride and getting housetraining while she is being treated. She is one of the sweetest girls you will ever find and is just 4 years old. She should be avialable for adoption near the end of August or early Sept. |

08/18/10: Wow, what a difference a month makes. The hair is growing back around her eyes from surgery and her right elbow is totally healed. Her left elbow still needs a pressure bandage to help the hygroma fluid go down. Its a long process but with time she will be just fine. 08/02/10: Photos coming soon! Her entropian surgery went very well, her stitches are out, and the hair around her eyes is growing back in. She's much more comfortable. We are still working on the hygroma's on both elbows and have purchased specially made harness that pads both elbows but she has needed the fluid drained a couple of times now. We're hoping to get on top of this soon as she is a great girl who needs her forever home. Extremely SWEET! 07/10/10: This sweet girl is also 13 months old and will be undergoing surgery for entropian this Tues. She also is recovering from hygromas on both elbows from laying on hard surfaces. She lacked proper Vet care before coming to us, so we are getting her what she needs and she can go to a forever home without anymore pain. She should be ready for her forever home in a couple of weeks. She is already up to date on all vaccines and spayed. |

08/18/10: He is doing better, but not great. We believe this guy has 'slipping hocks' so we are checking on some elastic braces that might help him. He has made extreme progress and gets around so much better but he will always have weakness in his back legs. He is very strong otherwise, and we are looking for a home for him that will let him swim and walk on soft surfaces. He's an absolute joy, a VERY HAPPY boy, and doesn't meet a stranger. Loves everybody! 07/10/10: This guy is 6 years old and has some orthopedic issues in his back legs. We just got him in, and are currently evaluating his physical situation. He is a great boy and suffered from severe neglect before a kind Vet asked that he be surrendered to her, so she could give him the help he needed. Now that she has him up on his feet, we are going to try and take it from there to help him further and find him that special home who might get him swimming for some therapy. |
